TULIP DOESN'T FEEL SAFE

A video to help kids deal with unsafe situations.

Today, more children than ever before are affected daily by the threat of unsafe situations in their lives—youth violence, domestic violence, child abuse, and neglect. And when children grow up with the stress of these threats, they're more likely to develop distorted beliefs and perceptions about themselves that presage a lifetime of difficulty. All too often, these children blame themselves for family problems and they also believe they can control, change, or "cure" these problems.

TULIP DOESN'T FEEL SAFE, a quality twelve-minute video from Johnson Institute, provides an excellent opportunity for educators, school counselors, and other professionals to help children deal immediately with unsafe situations in their lives by developing valuable lifeskills and more realistic, positive perceptions of themselves.

STOP - a decision-making model to help children devise a safe plan of action

"Helping Hands" - an exercise to help children remember where to find help

Children will respond to this engaging story about a young make-believe character (from "Rulu Land") who learns important new skills, then successfully uses them to deal with an unsafe situation in her own life. Designed to meet the special needs of young children (Grades K-3), this non-threatening story clearly illustrates that kids do have choices, even in unsafe and risky situations. By viewing and discussing this video with an adult facilitator, young children can learn important lifeskills and become familiar with resources they can use to help themselves.

This exceptional communications tool will be useful for educators, prevention specialists, guidance counselors, family therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, health practitioners, employee assistance counselors, and members of the clergy.

The video comes with a handy Facilitator's Guide incorporating helpful background information with a story synopsis, guide for use, resource lists, and discussion questions/exercises to maximize the effectiveness of the story and the impact of the messages.

This video is an excellent lifeskills development resource to either stand alone or to use in conjunction with Johnson Institute Programs and publications-particularly BUILDING TRUST, MAKING FRIENDS: DELLA THE DINOSAUR TALKS ABOUT VIOLENCE AND ANGER MANAGEMENT (Grades K-6.)

TULIP DOESN'T FEEL SAFE effectively communicates these vital messages to young children:
• You are an important and valuable person
• You can trust your own feelings
• It isn't selfish to take care of yourself
• You don't have to stay in situations that feel unsafe
• You can make decisions and take action that will lead you to safety and help

TULIP DOESN'T FEEL SAFE is recommended for all children ages 4-9 participating in:

• Classroom lifeskills development programs
• Health and family life classes
• School or community prevention programs
• School or community COA support groups
• Student assistance programs
• Family counseling programs in treatment centers
• Child and youth agency programs
• Youth and family groups in churches, synagogues, and community centers
